Like many parts of the world, the people of Somaliland marked the 8th International Women’s Day on Tuesday. Somalilanders including government top officials gathered in the streets of Hargeisa to celebrate the event.
President of Somaliland Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud Silanyo in a statement praised the role of the women of Somaliland for the crucial role they play in development. “you brought light to the people of Somaliland when there was no one, you brought hopes for the better future for the republic of Somaliland, we will also be in debt to you, we love you, we respect you,” said the president.
Speaking to the press, the director general at the ministry of social affairs Lul Adan Gedi stressed the importance of women rights in the society. Her sentiments were echoed by Halima Haji Abdi, a chairperson of a women organisation who encouraged women to run for leadership positions.
Gedi who was accompanied by officials from the ministry donated food and clothing to the Hargeisa mental hospital.
The minister of social affairs Ali Mohamed Ahmed also sent congratulatory message to the women of Somaliland and all over the world.
