Energy minister Hussein Abdi Duale on Saturday formally opened the Somali Renewable Energy Forum 2016 conference organised by non-profit initiative Shuraako.
The conference which runs until Tuesday is attended by delegates from the United States, United Kingdom, Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia.The minister stressed the importance of cost effectiveness of renewable energy as well as it role in mitigating climate change.
The forum aims to address concerns associated with high cost of energy in region which has been cited as an impediment to growth of businesses as well putting strain on household economies.
Despite the Somali region immense energy potential for onshore wind power and solar energy, the Somali local demand for energy is far from being fully actualised.
The SREF 2016 forum also aims to underscore the needs expressed by local stakeholders who wish to advance reliable, sustainable, scaled generation and distribution of energy with special emphasis put on renewable energy.
